Dear Cassie,
The past few years have been difficult. Sadly in July of 1994 our leader Kim Il Sung passed away. Now his son Kim Jong Il has replaced him. For the last two years flooding has damaged our crops, and forced thousands out of their homes. This is just a few things that have been going on in Korea. Now that I have told you about life in Korea, tell me about life in the U.S.
Dear Kim,
I'm writing to you to inform you about my government. Our government in the United States follows a constitution that protects the people of our country. We are given tremendous freedom and many privileges. The Constitution of our government gives us due process of law which means that we have a right to a fair trial, the right to an attorney and other ways that the individual is protected by the government. The Executive branch, consists of the Vice President, Al Gore and President, Bill Clinton enforces the laws for the citizens. The Legislative branch, includes Congress. The House of Representatives and the Senate make up Congress. Congress makes the laws so that our country can expand and grow, but also to keep peace and order in our society.
Along with the tremendous freedom that we have, we also have a say in who we elect as representatives. In the U.S, free elections are used to select representatives. The elections are free and fair because we use secret ballots. Secret ballots is the right to vote in privacy. The powers of the government are based on the permission of the people. Meaning that the government can't do anything without the permission of the people. The rights we have as citizens are we are allowed freedom of speech, religion, and the press. We have the right to voice our opinion. We are allowed to attend any church we desire, and practice any religion. We have the right to express our own views through newspaper. We also have the right to go to school, but not everybody wants to take advantage of this right.
In your government you only had one leader. Having one leader for almost 50 years was probably boring. Now that your former president, Kim Sung Il has passed away did the government change any since his son Kim Jong Il took over? Eventually, I hope you gain more freedom in your country.
Sincerely,
Richard L.
