Election Discussion or Essay Questions

4. What do you think is the most important issue in this election?

Dear Election Central 2008,

I am emailing to respond to question number 4; what is the most important issue in this election. The most important issue in the 2008 election is abortion. Ever since the decision in the Roe v. Wade case this has been a very controversial topic. Each candidate has a side on abortion and I know that it will certainly be playing a big role in which candidates i vote for at every level but especially for president.

Abortion is taking countless numbers of lives before they are even able to start. When a baby is aborted that is a life that is not able to come into this world. Certain cases should justify a mother making the decision such as rape, incest, a mother that is too young, or if the mother is at risk because of the pregnancy. But for the cases that don't meet the above criteria it is 100% wrong and shouldn't be legal. It is a woman's responsibility to protect herself against pregnancy if she doesn't have the desire to be pregnant. The only way to be sure of that is to remain abstinent and every woman that has sexual intercourse is at risk of pregnancy and they should know that. So by engaging in such acts the woman is accepting the risk of pregnancy whether they like it or not. it is not fair to then let them turn around and bail out of a pregnancy because of their poor decisions. It is wrong and can't be justified except in extreme cases.

Thank You,
Steve B.

The most important issue in this election is the controversy over immigration. Many people are disputing over the fate of the currently residing illegal immigrants in the United States and what should be done to reduce the number of illegal immigrants altogether. In my opinion, amnesty should not be given to each and every illegal immigrant in this country as that would attract even more immigrants in the hopes of receiving amnesty. However, I do not believe that all of the illegal immigrants should be rounded up and sent back to their original countries. I think a process and limit should be established on how many and who should be given amnesty and who ought to be sent back to their countries. Also, although building a wall does not appear to be the best method to keep illegal immigrants out of the country, when looking at statistics of lower crime and drug trafficking rates, it seems one of the most effective options available at this time.

I believe that the issue of abortion is the most important issue for this election. I don’t understand how individuals can be opposed of Capitol Punishment but for abortion; it’s hypocrisy. Capitol punishment deals with killing absolutely sick and disgusting individuals that have committed serious crimes and have endangered the safety and security of our people. Abortion is being used as a birth control; killing pure and innocent children because the parents are being irresponsible.

How is it that killing a murderer is obscene, but preventing a child from life and liberty, is not? The term pro-choice is just an excuse for saying “anti-consequence.” The individuals that believe that abortion is acceptable are stating that a woman should have the right to “choose”. If this is the reason why abortion is “acceptable” then why is prostitution illegal? It’s the woman’s body isn’t it? Shouldn’t she get to “choose” what she wants to do with it? Also, why is there a law against illegal drugs? Is it not our right to “choose” what goes into our bodies? In addition, why is there a law against suicide? Shouldn’t we have the right to “choose” whether we want to live or die?
Now, the reason we are restricted from making all these choices, is because it endangers our lives. Now the remaining questions are: whose life is more valuable, a child or an adult? Who should have the right to choose if a child should live or not? It is not the parent’s life, so why should they be given that right? The only exception to abortion would be in cases of rape or incest or if the mother’s life is at risk; other than that it is clearly unacceptable and evil. In closing, any candidate that is “accepting” of this child slaughter really needs to re-evaluate themselves and think about why they should be president. A president should be a person of principle; a pro-choice candidate is just not that and will not be given my vote.

Sincerely,
 Tiffany

The most important issue in this presidential 2008 election is immigration. This is the most important because it is a huge issue to everyone. Everyone has their own opinion on the matter. Also, each presidential candidate has their own solution to fix the immigration problem. Which ever solution fits that of the voters is how the candidate will win. The outcome of this election will solely depend on the candidates views on immigration. The voters will vote on the candidate that they think will do the best job dealing with the immigration issue.

If the candidates target that issue they could gain much support in the crowd if their views apply to them. Immigration is a big issue because their is the matter of the jobs and the economy at stake. Jobs and economy affect everybody. Also, if they focus on the majority crowd, they will gain the most support. This is why the 2008 presidential election will center around this issue.

The most important issue relating to the 2008 presidential election, in my mind, is the issue surrounding Global Warming. Global Warming is greatly going to effect today's youth as they become adults. Although the issue isn't spoken of much among the presidential candidates, I believe the issue should be addressed more. Once the "facts" of Global Warming are set out on the table, and more of today's youth realizes that the issue is going to effect them once they're adults, I believe this election will see a massive turnout of young voters casting their vote.

Global Warming is also an issue that presidential candidates should realize that they could capitalize on to gain the attention of younger voters. The candidates could shift their aim to the 18-25 year old voters who, for the most part, don't care about who becomes president or not. If a candidate solely focused on the issue of Global Warming, along with a few other issues, such as Social Security and other issues that are going to effect youths becoming adults, more of today's youth would realize what is actually going to effect them when they're older. This is good news for the candidate capitalizing on focusing on issues regarding today's youth because they will be the ones getting more votes.

I think the most important issue with the election of 08 is going to be the big problem we have with illegal immigration and even though this is such a touchy subject I think it is something that is going to play a big part in persuading the voters. The United States has a huge problem with the amount of illegal immigrants coming across the border. And, which ever campaigner we decide to vote in is going to play a huge part on what happens with all this. Some of the people we have running for president are saying that they would let illegal immigrants stay here for their list of reasons and some are saying they would build a wall within 6 months of being elected to keep the number of illegal down.
Think about it, we have about 1.2 million illegal immigrants that are currently living in the United States on the tax payers dollar, now that doesn't seem fare to all the hard working United State citizens at all dose it? To be supporting such a large number of people those are living here illegally? Each person has there own beliefs when it comes down to talking about this important matter and with what they want to happen with the immigration problem we have going on here in the U.S. so it is going to be a very touchy subject. And I do believe it will defiantly play a huge part in what the voters decide to do when it comes time to vote in our new president in 08.

I feel that the most important issues in this election are abortion and capitol punishment. I don’t understand how someone can say that abortion is murder when the fetus couldn’t even live on its own at the time a mother decides to abort. If a woman can’t support and afford to have a baby at the time they get pregnant, the government should not have the right to make her keep it. If we have the freedom of choice, why does the government get to decide what I do with my body? If they are going to give us the right to “choose” don’t limit it to their own moral values.
I also don’t understand how people could think that capitol punishment is cruel and unusual. Is it not cruel when a woman is brutally murdered by her husband, or raped and beaten to death, or when a man is found beaten to death in an ally and they find the perpetrator? It is hypocrisy to say that it isn’t. If people are allowed to live the rest of their life out, they are getting away with the crime they committed. No matter what punishment the government could come up with in jail. This country has become soft with criminals and the crime won’t stop until the government takes a firm hand in punishment.

The most important issue in the 2008 election is the war in Iraq.  Most American citizens have a strong opinion on the issue.  Either a person supports the war in Iraq and wants to continue the surge or people want our troops to come home and end the war.  There is no gray area.  The main reason that the American people oppose Bush is because of his choices in the war.  According to a recent poll 60% of Americans oppose the war in Iraq, but that does not mean that a we candidate will not propose a new option.  Bush cannot run for President again, so new faces will appear, and with them new ideas.  This makes the war in Iraq the most important issue in the 2008 Presidential election.

Bobby J.

The most important issue in the 2008 Election is the war in Iraq. It is vital that whoever becomes president has a plan of action for the war. Troops are being deployed everyday and many soldiers are being killed everyday in Iraq. The war in Iraq is a very important issue and the candidates need to have a plan. Whether or not they agreed with the initial descent into Iraq it is important now that they have a plan to either pull out from war or finish of the war in a timely and practical fashion. Therefore, the war in Iraq is an issue that should be discussed heavily in the upcoming 2008 Election.

The most important issue in the election of 2008 would have to be abortion and the right to it. personally i believe that in certain circumstances abortion could be allowed. circumstances may include: incest, rape, or if the mother or child are in danger. abortion as a form of birth control is wrong and should not be done. it is not only hurting the mother but another human being as well. one that could become a breathing, walking, talking, person, if given the chance. If a woman gets pregnant and is fit to deliver the baby she should only have two choices: one; to keep the baby and raise it as her own, or 2; to give it up for adoption. either way it is better then killing the baby.

Save a life, stop abortions

I think that there are many important issues in this election, but I would have to say that the most important would be the conflict between the US and Iraq. Bush went in for a reason, and I think that if we were to pull out sooner rather then later, then we would basically ruin everything that Bush went in Iraq to do and accomplish. We went in to help better their country, and if we pulled out just like that it would be basically like us spitting in their face. Why would you go start something that you weren’t going to fix? I didn’t quite agree with us going into Iraq in the first place, but now that we are it would be bad for our country to just up and leave. If the U.S did pull out of Iraq, it could possibly create another controversy like the 9/11 attacks.

I feel that the most important issue in the 2008 election is the war in Iraq/Afghanistan. This is definitely the biggest issue the United States has going on with another country, and the way we carry out and finish this war, along with the results it brings to the Middle East, will influence the way that the rest of the world views the United States. Leaving the Middle East too early will leave the impression that the United States doesn't finish what it starts, while staying too late will make the United States look like the unwanted world police. The 2008 presidential candidates should have definitive plans for finishing up the work in Iraq/Afghanistan so that the United States can stay on good terms with the rest of the world.

I believe that the most important issue in this election is Gay Marriage because it addresses the issue about Church and State and how interactive with each other the two should be. Since Thomas Jefferson wrote his letter to the Danbury Baptist Association in January of 1802, stating that there should be “a wall of separation between church and state,” one would think we would have a clear line drawn by now, nearly 2,000 years later. The idea that the State, or our Government, can ban Gay Marriage just because they think it’s “icky” or it makes them uncomfortable, is deplorable. There isn’t a way for the State or Government to say no to Gay Marriage without circling back to religious reasons.

The concept of marriage – two people joining together in a union because they love each other, or they want to spend the rest of their lives together – might have originated from religion, but times have changed. If Gay Marriage isn’t allowed because it is against one religion, then Agnostic Marriage should be banned, too, along with Atheist Marriage, and Murderers marrying. Banning one group of people from marriage because of their lifestyle is not only ethically wrong, it is the State showing favoritism to religion over the minority groups who don’t have a religion.

I believe that the most important issue in the 2008 Presidential election is stem cell research. stem cell research is very important because it can help cure and save the lives of many people with incurable conditions. There are various types of stem cell research, whether it is embryonic stem cells, adult stem cells, and more.
Stem cell research is a very controversial issue, especially the research of embryonic stem cells. Embryonic stem cell research uses the stem cells of the embryos and therefore people argue that taking the stem cells is harming/taking away a potential life. I believe, however, that if the embryo is not even born, how can we be killing it? It is not alive, and the stem cells from that embryo could heal and save so many lives. Diseases and conditions such as cancer, diabetes, and even heart disease could be cured with the use of stem cells, so the research of stem cells should be funded at encouraged in the United States.
As the issue currently stands, stem cell research has been shot down by President Bush, and now that we are about to elect a new president, stem cell research may actually be funded and encouraged. Stem cell research has the potential to save lives, and therefore is a very important issue, perhaps the most important issue in the 2008 Presidential election.

i believe that the most important issue in this election should be the economic crisis not only because it is happening right now but also if either of these candidates finds a better solution then we know they are properly ready to lead our country and that they can deal with crises in America and solve them quickly. This has been the worst economic crisis since the great depression and is on every American's mind and scares most. We've seen some of the greatest losses in the stock market ever in one day and seen some of the biggest bankruptcies in the world. This will become worse if we do not do something to solve this issue.

Dear George Cassutto,

The most important issue of the 2008 election is the question of economy. The economy is depressing and worsening. I need to know that I will have a president that can support and help the economy. America is strong, it just needs the help of a leader. Middle class should not be taxed greater for the support of the lower half of the economy. We need the Americans to support and work for themselves, making an income that will effect themselves and not others. The trade and supply of demand is also a great issue. If demand is greater than supply, there will be an issue amongst the citizens.

Another issue that is major within the economy is oil and gas prices. We need a president that will be smart enough and determined enough to find a different source of oil. A president that will be sufficient in finding oil for the American's that will cost less and be better for the economy in general. The economy is in a slump and someone needs to get us out. But the big question is who?

Thank you,
Tiffany B.

I'm answering to question #4 and I think that the most important issue in this election would have to be the environment and what we will do to make sure that we can make greenhouses gasses go down and have more fuel friendly car production. Also one of the big issues would be the offshore drilling in the gulf of Mexico. I think that its a good idea because it will lighten our dependency on foreign oil a little but it will also cost a lot of money to make and that wouldn't hold very well because of our economy right now. We need to bring our economy back instead of letting it spiral out of control and we also need to not be in so much debt to so many countries. I kind of rambled a little but I think that those three things are the most important issues in our 2008 Presidential Election

Thanks,
Tanner N.

Dear Election Central 2008,

I am emailing to respond to question 4. I believe that our economic problem is the most important issue that we have today. The economy has hurt so many families this year that we need to put a stop to it. There has to be a way to fix the pressure that the economy has put on the citizens today.

Since gas prices started to go up we have been struggling to keep up with our money. Since then more things have gone up. The housing market it terrible. Food prices have became outrageous. And gas has yet to go completely back to normal. These prices have caused too many people to have issues just getting through everyday life. I feel that we need to deal with our economy first before we can even imagine to have our country back to normal. I feel that this is more important than any other issue because our country is made up of consumers and that is going to eventually ruin many peoples lives.

Sincerely,
Haley T.
