George Cassutto: Recent Awards and Honors

Aaron Willis of the Social Studies Service asked me to edit his project Teaching Government and Citienship With the Internet. The book is finished, and you can see the list of topics and active links on the Social Studies Service web site.

Pictured here at the Maryland Instructional Computer Coordinators Association conference (March 27, 1998), I was selected as that organization's Maryland Computer Educator of the Year for 1998. It was a great honor to be nominated and selected, and I appreciate all the hard work and support my superiors have shown me and my students. The award includes  $2,500 towards a computer system. I will taking delivery of a Sager 233 sometime in Mid-April. Just in time for the Connected Classroom Conference in Atlantic City!

Sister Joyce Gadoua found our Civil Rights Project and other projects stemming from my efforts as NHHS web master. She sent me a message saying she felt these on-line projects met the standards of her Educator of Excellence Awards. Thank you very much, Sister! As Net Day coordinator I had the honor of meeting the "Education Governor" Parris N. Glendening at the Net Day celebration held on October 18, 1997 at the Baltimore Convention Center. The autograph says "George -- Thanks for all your help on Net Weekend '97. Parris Glendening." Below, state school officials listen to the governor commend the volunteers who helped wire their district's schools.

Microsoft Judges Holocaust Lesson Plan as Grand Prize Winner.

North Hagerstown High School's web site was recognized by Edview, a Minneapolis-based software firm for "excellence in the use of Internet in education." Tom D., a junior who has been instrumental in the development of the web site, was honored, along with myself at a Washington reception. I was selected as 1996 and 1997 Computer Teacher of the Year For Maryland by Technology and Learning Magazine and Microsoft. Just thought you'd like to know. You can also read an article reprinted here from the September, 1996 issue of the magazine on what we are doing here at North High to make the Internet a viable teaching tool.

In April of 1997, I was nominated by the Hagerstown Chamber of Commerce as a candidate for the Teacher of the Year award. While I did not make the final cut, I was honored along with 11 other Washington County Teachers with the Excellence In Education Award. Thanks to the students and community members who supported their teacher honorees!

In 1996, I was inducted in the STAR Society by Classroom Connect. I was given the award at the first Connected Classroom Conference held in March, 1996 in Baltimore, Maryland. The award is given to educators who are making a difference in the world of educational technology and integrating the Internet into their curriculum.
